To protect the integrity of the Ladakhi bazaar — its craft, its provenance, its people — against the flattening pressures of mass commerce.
The association was founded in the winter of 1974 by seventeen shopkeepers of the old Leh bazaar. Their concern was simple: that the influx of manufactured goods from the plains was eroding the livelihoods of local artisans, and with them, a way of life.
We verify member merchants against standards of craft and origin. We negotiate fair terms with regional suppliers and shipping cooperatives. We maintain the archive of trades, tools and family histories that would otherwise slip out of memory. We host the annual winter fair. And we run this directory.
Membership is open to any independent, family-run business operating within the Leh district that meets the association's standards. Applications are reviewed twice yearly. Enquire at the secretariat in the main bazaar.
